EOF warns about sexual-enhancement herbal honey containing undeclared drugs

Greece’s National Organization for Medicines has issued a warning about TONGKAT ALI HONEY HERBAL MIXED PASTE, a honey-based product marketed online as a sexual-enhancement supplement.

The product is presented as a herbal honey mixture containing various plant extracts. It is advertised to boost libido, energy and sexual performance. But information received by the EOF from German authorities found that the product contains sildenafil and tadalafil, neither of which appears on its declared ingredients list.

The warning specifically concerns batch 12122029. Sildenafil and tadalafil are not herbal substances. They are active ingredients in approved prescription medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction, and their use should depend on medical indications, the consumer’s health and any other medicines they take.

The main concern is that consumers do not know they are taking these substances or in what quantities. The two ingredients can interact with nitrate medicines used for cardiovascular conditions, potentially causing a dangerous fall in blood pressure. The FDA has issued similar warnings about sexual-enhancement products containing undeclared sildenafil or tadalafil.
