Erdogan gives Trump a pompous welcome at Turkey summit

U.S. President Donald Trump was treated to an exceptionally grand reception by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan upon his arrival for a NATO summit in Turkey. Erdogan, who had personally greeted Trump at the airport, arranged a second, opulent welcome at the presidential palace.

Trump's limousine was escorted by a mounted unit in blue uniforms, led by riders carrying the Turkish and U.S. flags. The ceremony continued with the U.S. national anthem, cannon salutes, and a military band. Overhead, fighter jets painted the sky in red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag, reportedly F5 jets from the air force's aerobatic team. Such a reception was not announced for other summit guests.

Both leaders highlighted their close ties. "We are good friends," Trump stated, also commending Turkey for its loyalty, which he suggested distinguished it from other U.S. allies. Trump had previously indicated he would attend the summit primarily because of Erdogan. The Turkish president echoed the sentiment, saying, "Being with my dear friend here in Ankara has given us additional strength. I want to particularly emphasize the importance of this visit."
