Erdogan Visits Saudi Arabia for Talks on Regional Security and Potential Defense Pact

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Saudi Arabia on Friday for a one-day working visit, his second trip to the kingdom this year. The visit occurs amidst heightened regional tensions and follows Saudi Arabia's recent launch of a multinational maritime security initiative for the Red Sea.

Erdogan is scheduled to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is also in the kingdom. Presidential communications director Burhanettin Duran stated the trip would focus on "bilateral relations and regional developments." Regional media reports suggest discussions will center on maritime security, the impact of the ongoing conflict involving Iran, and defense cooperation, though Ankara has remained tight-lipped on specifics.

Talk of a potential three-way alliance between Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan has emerged, with reports suggesting a joint defense agreement could be signed. This would potentially extend the existing mutual defense pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to include Turkiye. However, none of the governments have publicly confirmed these plans, leaving open the possibility of a more modest joint statement.

The visit's timing is significant, occurring shortly after Saudi Arabia announced its maritime security initiative, which has already garnered support from 14 countries, including Turkiye and Pakistan. This initiative aims to protect shipping routes through the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb strait, and the Gulf of Aden.

During the visit, it is envisaged that President Erdogan will meet with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, as well as with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan.
