Erfurt's Old Synagogue Closes for Renovations Until February

The historic Old Synagogue in Erfurt, a significant site for Jewish heritage, will close its doors to visitors starting today for extensive renovation work. The closure is expected to last until the end of February, preventing access to the "Erfurter Schatz" (Erfurt Treasure).

The primary reason for the closure is the fundamental renovation of the sanitary facilities, which have been in continuous operation for 17 years. This essential work aims to modernize and maintain the historic building.

Despite the main exhibition's closure, visitors interested in Jewish life in Erfurt can still explore other historical sites. The medieval mikveh, or ritual bath, will be open free of charge until the end of October. Additionally, the "Kleine Synagoge" (Small Synagogue) and the medieval patrician house "Zum Güldenen Krönbacken" are also accessible without charge during the same period. For those who prefer an outdoor experience, the "Inter Judeos" walking tour offers a journey through the former Jewish quarter with 19 informational stations. Free guided tours of the Jewish Quarter are also available on weekends.
