Veteran actor Eric Roberts, 70, has spoken candidly about the difficult relationship he shares with his daughter, actress Emma Roberts. In a podcast interview in October 2024, Roberts identified the "loss of the relationship with my daughter" as the most challenging period of his life. He clarified that his feelings stem from sadness over lifelong misunderstandings rather than anger, stating, "It's not pain. It's more sadness about the misunderstandings that will likely remain throughout our lives, because we are all human."

Roberts revealed that becoming a grandfather intensified these feelings. He noted that his eldest grandson, who he described as very similar to Emma, quickly formed a bond with him, which served as a stark reminder of what he lacked in his own relationship with his daughter. Despite the perceived distance, Roberts has previously denied that he and Emma have completely cut ties, explaining in another interview in April that their relationship only appears complicated to outsiders who don't know the full story.

The actor took responsibility for his shortcomings as a father, admitting he was "emotionally unreliable" while Emma was growing up. He recalled a cherished memory from Emma's infancy, when she stopped crying as he sang "Happy Birthday" to her, finding his face with her eyes. He described this moment as "magic," signifying an early recognition of him.

Speculation about their strained relationship resurfaced when Roberts did not attend Emma Roberts' wedding in April to actor Cody John. His sister, Hollywood star Julia Roberts, was present at the ceremony. Following the wedding, Eric Roberts briefly commented, expressing his love for his daughter and happiness that she celebrated her day as she wished, with the people she wanted.
