Erik Lira is firmly in Cruz Azul's plans for the Apertura 2026 season, according to head coach Joel Huiqui. During his official presentation as the team's permanent coach, Huiqui addressed persistent rumors linking the midfielder to a move away from the club.

Lira's profile has significantly risen in the transfer market following his participation in the 2026 World Cup. Several clubs have reportedly shown interest, including Mexican side Monterrey, which is rumored to be willing to meet his $20 million release clause. European clubs, particularly French side Troyes, recently promoted to Ligue 1 and part of the City Football Group, and Spanish club Girona, also part of the same group, are considered strong contenders for his signature.

Despite the external interest, Huiqui emphasized that Cruz Azul's priority is to retain Lira. "As coaching staff and as a club, we would love for Erik to continue playing at a high level," Huiqui stated. He added that if there is genuine interest from other clubs, they expect it to be formally presented, acknowledging the implications of any potential transfer.

Huiqui revealed he had recently spoken with Lira, who is currently on vacation, and found the midfielder fully committed to Cruz Azul. "I spoke with Erik a couple of days ago; I sent him a message and we had a very late call. He is fully committed to us and the institution," the coach confirmed. Lira is expected to rejoin the team next week to begin preparations for the upcoming season.
