Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria's First Commonwealth Fencing Gold

Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson has made history by securing Nigeria's first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships. The 16-year-old triumphed in the men's U-23 epee event held in Lagos, marking a significant milestone for Nigerian fencing.

Competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching his allegiance from England, Esiovwa-Thompson delivered a dominant performance. He defeated three Indian opponents en route to the final, where he faced Asian champion Lokesh Vemani. In a display of composure and skill, the Nigerian teenager won the final match 15–5, securing the gold medal.

Esiovwa-Thompson's achievement is particularly notable as he is the first Nigerian to win any medal, let alone gold, at an international fencing competition. His path to the podium was impressive, as he topped his initial pool unbeaten and advanced through the knockout stages. He defeated South Africa's Karabo Mathobela 15–7 in the round of 16 and overwhelmed India's Shivaansh Kapoor 15–2 in the quarterfinals. A tougher semifinal against India's Ashwini Shaurya saw Esiovwa-Thompson edge through 15–11, fueled by the home crowd's support.

This historic victory is the culmination of years of dedication and prior international success. Before representing Nigeria, Esiovwa-Thompson had already won gold in the U-13 boys' epee at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge and a bronze in the cadet men's epee team event in Naples while competing for England. These earlier achievements laid the groundwork for his current celebrated achievement with Nigeria.
