ESUT imposes N500,000 penalty on reckless driving after final exams

Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is implementing a strict N500,000 penalty for any student caught driving recklessly on campus or its surrounding areas after completing their final examinations. This decisive action comes as a response to the dangerous practice of students engaging in reckless driving to celebrate the end of their academic year, which has led to numerous injuries.

ESUT Registrar, Mr. Ambrose Ugwu, announced the new policy, emphasizing its role in curbing accidents and safeguarding lives. "Any vehicle impounded over such anomaly will pay N500,000 penalty," Ugwu stated. The directive, which officially begins on July 31, targets students finishing their final exams. Beyond the financial penalty, vehicles impounded for such violations will not be released until the fine is paid, and culpable students will face additional disciplinary actions according to university regulations.

This measure is in compliance with a resolution from the Enugu State House of Assembly and a prior directive from the state commissioner for education dated December 20, 2024. The university has mandated deans, directors, and department heads to thoroughly inform and warn final-year students about the strict adherence required. The institution's chief security officer and law enforcement agencies are tasked with maintaining vigilance to ensure order on campus.
