Ethiopian Expands Operations in Nigeria, Adds Port Harcourt

Ethiopian Airlines is expanding its Nigerian network with more flights to Lagos and Kano and a new service to Port Harcourt.

The airline will raise its Lagos operation to 21 weekly flights, offering up to three services a day. It will also add four flights per week to Kano, bringing that route to 11 weekly flights.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to begin four weekly flights to Port Harcourt, complementing existing services to Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Enugu. Once the Port Harcourt service starts, the airline will operate 53 weekly flights to Nigeria.

Firiehiwot Mekonnen, Ethiopian Airlines’ general manager in Nigeria, said the additional capacity reflected the carrier’s confidence in Nigeria’s aviation market and broader economic potential. “Nigeria remains a very important market for Ethiopian Airlines,” she said. “By increasing our frequencies and adding Port Harcourt, we are giving passengers more flexibility, greater seat availability, better connectivity, and access to more attractive and competitive fares.”

Mekonnen said the expansion would also create activity for Nigerian airports, ground-handling companies, travel agencies, hotels, transport providers, caterers and other local service businesses. She linked the additional flights to tourism, trade, investment and direct and indirect employment opportunities.
