EU and Kenya Strengthen Alliance for Sustainable Trade and Investment Cooperation

The European Union and Kenya have committed to deepening their strategic alliance, focusing on enhancing trade, advancing digital transformation, and promoting sustainable investment. This strengthened partnership aims to foster economic growth and development for the East African nation.

Discussions between EU Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Kenyan President William Ruto, as reported by the European Commission, centered on cooperation within the Global Gateway initiative. Both parties agreed to invest in clean transportation systems and streamline trade processes along the vital Northern Corridor in East Africa. Additionally, efforts will be made to deploy high-speed connectivity to over 3,000 public offices, schools, and other key institutions across Kenya.

A significant aspect of the agreement involves addressing outstanding trade issues to ensure full implementation of existing agreements, thereby maximizing benefits for businesses in both the EU and Kenya. In the digital realm, the EU proposed increased collaboration on artificial intelligence, digital identity, and secure connectivity.

Vice-President Virkkunen unveiled a substantial assistance package for Kenya. This includes 17 million euros to support the transformation of the Northern Corridor, focusing on developing cold chains for fresh produce, shifting transport from air to sea, and simplifying trade regulations. Furthermore, 15 million euros will fund the expansion of Kenya's national fiber optic network, 10 million euros will bolster the Kenya Digital Transformation Centre, and 16 million euros are allocated to help transition refugee camps into integrated communities.
