EU Commissioner tells Mitsotakis: Greece makes significant progress on rule of law

The European Union's Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, and the Rule of Law, Michael McGrath, has acknowledged the significant strides Greece has made in strengthening its rule of law. During a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion, McGrath lauded the positive outcomes of reforms implemented by Greece in this crucial sector, noting the country's progress in recent years.

I would like to highlight the excellent cooperation we have in the area of the rule of law, as well as the significant progress you have made in recent years.

McGrath specifically praised the collaborative efforts between the EU and Greece, emphasizing the marked improvement in governance and the legal framework. He underscored the importance of a robust rule of law as a key driver for economic enhancement and investment attraction. "I would like to highlight the excellent cooperation we have in the area of the rule of law, as well as the significant progress you have made in recent years," the Commissioner stated during the meeting with the Greek Prime Minister.

Further elaborating on the impact of these reforms, McGrath expressed his conviction that the measures enacted and the reinforced rule of law environment in Greece have yielded tangible benefits, contributing to the acceleration of the country's economic growth. "I believe that, without a doubt, the reforms that have been implemented and the rule of law environment here in Greece have helped you to develop and strengthen the economy, and I believe, without a doubt, that it is now increasingly recognized that certainty regarding the rule of law enhances investor confidence, creates an environment in which businesses invest, grow, and create jobs," the Commissioner emphasized.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis, in turn, affirmed Greece's commitment to these reforms, stating, "I want to reiterate that we take the European Commission's recommendations on the rule of law extremely seriously. I believe that if one looks at the performance of recent years, one finds that we are continuously improving, while we are also on track to respond to previous recommendations in a very systematic way." He also mentioned ongoing efforts to reform the judicial system, aiming to ensure justice is delivered efficiently and within a timeframe perceived as fair by citizens.
