EU Demands Independent Probe into Death of Nicaraguan Indigenous Leader Rivera

The European Union has voiced deep concern and sorrow following the death of respected Miskito indigenous leader and former legislator Brooklyn Rivera, who was in state custody in Nicaragua. The EU is demanding a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his passing.

Rivera, who had been detained since September 2023, died while under state care. The European External Action Service (EEAS) conveyed condolences to his family and community, noting with "concern the circumstances surrounding the death" particularly given reports of prolonged detention without contact with his family.

The EU's statement explicitly calls on Nicaraguan authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the events leading to Rivera's death. This call for an independent investigation comes amid broader concerns about human rights and political freedoms in Nicaragua.

Furthermore, the EU used the occasion to reiterate its long-standing appeal for the release of all individuals detained for political reasons within the country. The bloc reaffirmed its solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and its support for democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law, emphasizing the vital role of civil society in upholding these values.
