EU implements tariff cuts for US goods, fulfilling trade deal promises

The European Union has begun implementing tariff reductions and duty-free import quotas for certain goods originating from the United States. Effective immediately, lobsters and frozen lobster products, along with industrial goods, can be imported into the EU without tariffs. Reduced tariffs and preferential quotas are also in place for specific agricultural products and seafood from the U.S., enhancing market access.

These measures fulfill the EU's commitments under a trade agreement reached last year with then-U.S. President Donald Trump. The deal was crucial in averting a potential trade war between the two economic powers. The EU Commission anticipates that European consumers will benefit from improved access to U.S. imports and potentially lower prices.

However, the agreement was not without concessions from the EU. The bloc had to accept U.S. tariffs of up to 15 percent on most goods exported to the United States and make further concessions, such as eliminating EU tariffs on U.S. industrial products. To ensure compliance, the trade facilitation rules for the U.S. are tied to a safeguard mechanism.

This safeguard allows the EU to suspend its tariff concessions if the U.S. violates the agreed-upon terms. The agreement has a definitive expiration date of December 31, 2029. The EU Commission is tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of the changes' impact by June 30, 2029, and may propose extending the tariff concessions. Trump had previously set July 4, the U.S. National Day, as a deadline for the EU's implementation, threatening higher tariffs if the bloc failed to meet its obligations.
