EU intensifies criticism of Israeli settlements, calls them illegal

The European Union has escalated its condemnation of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, with the bloc's top diplomat declaring them illegal under international law. Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, directly called on the Israeli government to cease its expansionist activities.

Kallas specifically targeted the planned construction of the strategic E1 settlement. She emphasized that proceeding with this project would create a significant obstacle to the establishment of a viable, contiguous Palestinian state. The EU has consistently opposed settlement expansion, viewing it as a major impediment to peace negotiations and a two-state solution.

The renewed criticism from the EU underscores the growing international pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government regarding its settlement policies. The bloc's firm stance reiterates its commitment to international law and a just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, urging Israel to reverse course on policies that undermine these goals.
