EU Reaches Provisional Deal on Air Passenger Rights, Upholding Compensation

The European Union has reached a provisional agreement on air passenger rights, preserving the current compensation rules for flight delays exceeding three hours. This decision aims to enhance transparency in air travel pricing and baggage policies.

Under the new accord, travelers will be entitled to compensation ranging from 250 to 600 euros, depending on the flight distance, if their flight is delayed by more than three hours. This maintains the status quo, countering an earlier proposal by EU countries that suggested extending the delay threshold to four hours and reducing compensation amounts. European sources confirmed these details.

Airlines will be required to inform passengers about their compensation rights within 96 hours of landing, presenting the information clearly. Additionally, passengers will be allowed to bring a small personal item, such as a backpack or handbag, at no extra cost. The basic ticket price must now include a carry-on suitcase.

The agreement also mandates that airlines cannot charge extra fees for families wishing to sit together. Furthermore, families traveling with children can bring their baby's stroller to the boarding gate free of charge. This provisional agreement, which aligns with the primary demands of the European Parliament and consumer associations, is scheduled to take effect in March of the following year.
