EU urges Kosovo leaders to form new institutions without delay

The European Union Office in Kosovo has issued a strong call for political actors to establish new institutions promptly, stressing that the country requires functional governance to continue its journey toward EU membership. The office reiterated its commitment to supporting Kosovo but highlighted the critical need for stable institutions capable of addressing citizens' needs and advancing reforms.

"It is up to Kosovo's political actors to find a solution and ensure the establishment of stable and functional institutions," the EU office stated, emphasizing that these bodies must be able to respond effectively to the needs of the population and drive forward Kosovo's European integration agenda.

Echoing these sentiments, the U.S. and German embassies in Kosovo have also urged leaders to cooperate and form institutions in line with the Constitution and court decisions. Both diplomatic missions warned that the prolonged political deadlock is harming Kosovo by causing missed opportunities. The U.S. embassy specifically noted that citizens expect their leaders to prioritize the country's best interests.

Despite these international appeals, the Kosovo Assembly has not yet been constituted following the February 2025 elections. Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti requested additional time for discussions regarding the election of the Kosovo President, while the constitutional deadline for the Assembly's formation is set to expire soon. The German embassy underscored the urgency, stating that "Kosovo has no time to lose" and needs institutions with a full mandate to continue working on the shared European agenda.
