Europe battles escalating wildfires amid heatwaves and political divides

Europe is grappling with an intensifying wildfire season, marked by prolonged heatwaves, drought, and strong winds that fuel rapid fire spread and complicate firefighting efforts. Spain, Greece, and France are among the nations currently battling extensive blazes.

Spain has recorded over 180,000 hectares destroyed by fires since the start of the year. Tragically, two firefighters died when their helicopter crashed during intervention, and three other firefighters have lost their lives in recent days. Authorities have ordered mass evacuations in several areas, with over a hundred homes destroyed.

Meanwhile, Slovenia is also experiencing a heatwave that increases fire risk. Firefighters are working to contain a localized fire in a difficult-to-access area, with underground hotspots and steep terrain posing ongoing challenges.
