Europe Swelters: 135 Million Face Extreme Heat, UK Braces for Hottest Day

Europe is grappling with an extreme heatwave, with projections indicating that over 135 million people will experience temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. The continent is facing a severe heat crisis, with France recording a scorching 42.5 degrees Celsius and the United Kingdom anticipating its hottest day of the year amidst escalating wildfire threats.

The current heatwave is particularly impacting France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. Across a broader scope, nearly three out of every five Europeans, approximately 340 million individuals, are expected to endure temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. These forecasts are based on analyses from European news agencies, utilizing data from the German Meteorological Service (DWD) and population projections from the Joint Research Centre.

This extreme weather underscores Europe's vulnerability to rising global temperatures. The continent is warming at the fastest rate globally, and many regions are inadequately prepared for the escalating frequency and intensity of heatwaves. Scientists widely link these phenomena to human-induced climate change, noting that recurring heatwaves and droughts in recent years have not only fueled wildfires but also resulted in thousands of fatalities.

France is among the hardest-hit nations, with Meteo-France reporting a high of 42.5 degrees Celsius in Chateaumeillant, central France. Paris experienced temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius, and much of the country remains under a heatwave warning as extreme temperatures persist. In Italy, an estimated 29 million people are affected, primarily along the west coast, Po Valley, southern regions, and the Italian islands. Spain is also facing intense heat, with its meteorological agency, Aemet, recording temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius in the central part of the country. The UK is witnessing an unusual surge in temperatures, with at least 36 degrees Celsius recorded at around 40 locations in central and southern England.
