European Athletics Championships: Wilma Heltelä receives significant competition invitations after winning silver

Pole vaulter Wilma Heltelä secured a silver medal at the European Athletics Championships, celebrating her achievement alongside gold medalist Angelica Moser and bronze medalist Marie-Julie Bonnin. The podium finish marked a significant milestone for Heltelä, who recalled sharing a similar podium with Moser ten years prior at the 2016 World Junior Championships, where she won bronze.

We noted together that it has been ten years since our last joint podium. In 2016 at the Junior World Championships, Angelica won and I was on bronze. So, in ten years, I have moved up one step next to her.

Reflecting on her journey, the 28-year-old athlete noted the decade it took to reach this level, moving up from third to second place beside Moser. She shared a lighthearted moment with her friend, recalling a past boast that she would one day win silver. Heltelä emphasized the long-standing mutual respect and support between her and Moser, highlighting their shared history in the sport.

Amidst the celebrations, which continued late into the night at the team hotel with simple fare like McDonald's, Heltelä received significant news: confirmation of her participation in the upcoming Diamond League competitions in Lausanne and Zurich. This invitation represents a crucial step for her career, opening doors to compete at the highest level.

Things are pretty much the same as yesterday. It's nice to notice that even though the medal is a great thing, the important things are still the same.

Heltelä expressed her eagerness to compete against the best, stating that her improved performance now earns her these opportunities. To secure a spot in the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest this September, she understands the necessity of performing exceptionally well in the Diamond League events. Her motivation is high, with much at stake in the remainder of the season as she focuses on clearing greater heights.

That is, of course, an important thing. I want to compete at the highest level, and now the doors are starting to open again. My own level has risen to such an extent that I deserve those places.
