European Bicycle Giant Accell on the Brink of Bankruptcy

Accell, Europe's leading bicycle manufacturer, has filed for insolvency, marking a significant downturn for the Dutch company. The firm, known for brands such as Batavus, Babboe, and Raleigh, announced on Thursday that its Dutch entities had been granted a suspension of payments. This move follows a period of considerable financial strain, exacerbated by pandemic-related supply chain issues. During the COVID-19 crisis, Accell struggled to meet demand due to component shortages. When logistics eventually improved, the company found itself with a substantial surplus of bicycles, according to local media reports.

Despite a restructuring agreement reached with creditors in February, which involved transferring ownership to them, Accell was unable to secure a buyer. "This is a deeply sad and frustrating situation," stated Jonas Nilsson, Accell's CEO, in a company statement. "Every realistic option for the future of the company has been relentlessly explored, without any leading to a solution that would maintain the group in its current form."

Accell's financial troubles have had ripple effects, with its French subsidiary, Cycles Lapierre, also filing for judicial reorganization earlier on Thursday. The company, based in Heerenveen, Netherlands, was acquired by the investment fund KKR and a consortium in 2022. Accell has not provided further comment beyond its initial statement.
