European Cup Winner Jimmy Rimmer, Legendary Goalkeeper, Dies at 78

Jimmy Rimmer, a celebrated English goalkeeper renowned for his career with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Aston Villa, has passed away at the age of 78. His death marks the end of an era for English football, remembering a player who left an indelible mark on the sport.

Rimmer began his career at Manchester United in 1963, signing his first professional contract two years later. Although he served as a backup to Alex Stepney, he was an integral part of the team that clinched the European Cup in 1968, witnessing their 4-1 victory over Benfica at Wembley from the bench. He made 46 appearances for the club before a loan spell at Swansea City in 1973 seeking more playing time.

In 1974, Rimmer moved to Arsenal, where he established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper over three seasons, accumulating 146 appearances. His exceptional performances earned him the Arsenal Player of the Year award in 1975. During his tenure at Arsenal, he also earned his sole cap for the English national team in a friendly match against Italy in 1976.

His most successful period came at Aston Villa, joining in 1977. Rimmer quickly became a vital player, leading the team as their first-choice goalkeeper to the English league championship title in 1981. The following year, he started in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich but had to be substituted due to injury after just nine minutes. Aston Villa expressed deep sadness over his passing, extending condolences to his family and friends.
