European Democrats: Changing Serbia's Constitution for One Man's Ambition Leads to Autocracy

European Democrats have sharply criticized a proposal floated by Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić that could lead to constitutional changes allowing President Aleksandar Vučić to seek a third term in office. The pan-European centrist party voiced strong opposition on the social media platform X, asserting that constitutions are designed to protect democracy and should not be rewritten to accommodate the ambitions of a single individual.

Brnabić, during a visit to Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) stands in Resnik, suggested that after parliamentary elections and Vučić's potential return as prime minister, the constitution could be amended to enable him to run for president again. "We all want to vote, right? Then, after that, while (Vučić) is prime minister, we can change the constitution, and he can return to be president. There, we have a solution for everything," she said with a smile.

In response, European Democrats posted an image of Brnabić placing a crown on Vučić's head with the caption "We don't want kings." They believe that altering the constitution in such a manner opens the door to autocracy. The party expressed faith in the Serbian people to uphold democratic principles and ensure their votes count in upcoming elections, stating, "We believe the Serbian people will defend democratic rules and their voice will be heard in the next elections."
