Serbian lawmaker warns of post-election chaos, urges security vigilance

Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) lawmaker Vladimir Đukanović has called for heightened vigilance from security services, asserting that political opponents will reject unfavorable election outcomes and potentially incite public disorder. In an opinion piece for the newspaper Politika, Đukanović stated that while President Aleksandar Vučić has pledged to congratulate any election victor, there has been no reciprocal commitment from the opposition.

"This indicates to us that they will certainly not accept an unfavorable result for them and that they are already preparing an alibi for defeat," Đukanović wrote. He believes the opposition is focused on post-election scenarios and "how to restart the chaos on our streets" rather than campaigning.

He emphasized the critical importance of the upcoming elections for Serbia's future, drawing a parallel to the country's experience after the October 5, 2000, events. Đukanović cautioned against naivete, suggesting that a similar misjudgment could plunge the country back into a difficult position from which it is still struggling to recover.

We will have it on the palm of our hand how mature we are as a society and whether we will be naive and stupid again as at the beginning of the 21st century when, on October 5, 2000, naively thinking that all that glitters is gold, we actually led the country into the worst state of servitude from which we are still barely pulling ourselves out.
