European leaders meet Zelenskyy in Kyiv amid intensified Russian attacks, discuss EU accession and defense deal

European leaders made a significant journey to Kyiv, underscoring solidarity with Ukraine amidst escalating Russian aggression. Presidents Nicușor Dan of Romania, Maia Sandu of Moldova, and Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia joined European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The visit occurred as Russia intensified its aerial assaults, with missile and drone attacks hitting multiple regions, including Odesa, which had already endured five consecutive days of strikes resulting in casualties. Von der Leyen, arriving in Kyiv on Ukraine's Statehood Day, asserted that despite the attacks, "Moscow is weak."

A symbolic moment saw Zelenskyy present von der Leyen with the first Medal of Merit of the newly established Order of Europe, recognizing her consistent support for Ukraine. This gesture highlighted the strong personal and political ties between Ukraine and the European Union's executive branch.

Beyond symbolic gestures, the visit addressed critical strategic objectives. The primary focus was on reviving stalled EU accession negotiations for Ukraine, which have faced opposition, and initiating a new defense industrial partnership, dubbed the "Drone Deal." This initiative aims to translate Ukraine's battlefield experience into a shared European industrial capacity.
