Sara Curtis etched her name in the record books during the semifinals of the 50m backstroke at the European Championships in Paris. The Italian swimmer shattered the world record by 0.23 seconds, touching the wall in an astonishing 26.63.

Curtis, who had previously won a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle at the same championships, was visibly emotional after her record-breaking swim. She described feeling good heading into the race and pushing hard for the final strokes, still processing the magnitude of her accomplishment.

I arrived here and felt good, after the underwater I told myself to push to the last stroke and now it doesn't seem real.

The 20-year-old from Savigliano, who trains at Virginia University and in Italy, had qualified for the semifinals with a time of 27.31 seconds. Her performance in the semifinal not only secured her the top spot for the final but also cemented her place in swimming history.
