Eutelsat to receive $504 million under US wireless spectrum plan

European satellite operator Eutelsat anticipates receiving $504 million in incentive payments under a U.S. initiative to repurpose airwaves for advanced mobile and wireless services. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has greenlit a plan to relocate satellite operations from a portion of the C-band radio spectrum.

This reallocation will make 160 megahertz of capacity available for telecommunications companies to deploy next-generation wireless networks. Eutelsat's receipt of the payment, slated for 2031, is contingent upon the company successfully completing its transition within the deadlines set for 2030 and 2031.

The satellite operator must also ensure continued service for its existing customers throughout the process. In addition to the incentive payments, Eutelsat will be reimbursed for expenses incurred during the transition period.
