Every Journey a Gamble: Life on Benin-Warri Road of pains

The Benin-Sapele-Warri Road has become a symbol of neglect and broken promises for thousands in Nigeria's Niger Delta, transforming routine travel into a perilous gamble. Journeys that should take a mere hour often extend to six, eight, or even a full day due to the road's dilapidated state.

For thousands who depend on the Benin-Sapele-Warri Road, every trip is no longer routine. It is a gamble with time, livelihood and, sometimes, life itself.

Articulated trucks frequently sink into deep craters, swallowing their tires, while commercial buses swerve dangerously between gaping potholes. Traders watch their perishable goods rot in the prolonged traffic jams. Stranded commuters remain on high alert, constantly watching the road and the surrounding bushes for fear of kidnappers and armed robbers.

This road is now seen by many commuters as surpassing the infamous East-West Road as the most painful symbol of neglect in the region. The perception intensified after the Federal Government approved N1.9 trillion for 27 road projects across 15 states, with no major federal road projects announced for Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, or Akwa Ibom States. This omission reinforced a long-standing feeling that the region's infrastructure deficit continues to be inadequately addressed.

Today, many commuters believe the Benin-Sapele-Warri Road has overtaken it as the most painful symbol of that neglect.

Victor Okpamos, former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents' Chapel, highlighted the daily suffering on the Oghara-Mosogar axis. Despite Delta State announcing an emergency intervention on a failed section nearly two weeks prior, promised relief has yet to materialize. "Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, please kindly prevail on Obekpor Engineering Company to commence work in the interest of the people to ease suffering of motorists and other road users," Okpamos appealed, noting that stationery is on-site but there is no equipment or manpower.

Civil society leader Rev. David Ugolor believes the consequences extend beyond mere transportation issues. "The continued deterioration undermines economic growth, threatens public safety, and weakens national development," Ugolor stated. "Lives have been lost in avoidable road accidents. Businesses have suffered severe economic losses. Farmers struggle to move their produce. Patients are delayed in reaching medical facilities."
