Everything ready for Ilya Espino de Marotta to take over as Panama Canal administrator

Ilya Espino de Marotta is set to become the first woman to administer the Panama Canal, taking office at a ceremony on Monday, Sept. 7, at the Canal Administration Building.

The formal handover will include President José Raúl Mulino, Canal Affairs Minister and board chairman José Ramón Icaza, members of the board and other invited guests. It marks an orderly change in leadership at the interoceanic waterway and begins Espino de Marotta’s five-year term, which will run through 2033.

Espino de Marotta brings four decades of experience at the Panama Canal Authority. She studied engineering at Texas A&M University, earned a master’s degree in economic engineering from the Universidad Católica Santa María la Antigua, and completed executive training at INCAE Business School and the Kellogg School of Management.

During her career, she led strategic projects including the Panama Canal Expansion Program. She previously served as deputy administrator, the authority’s first chief sustainability officer, executive vice president for engineering and vice president of transit business.

Her arrival comes as public officials and former canal authorities debate the waterway’s next phase. Former administrator Jorge Luis Quijano identified port-system integration, development of a gas pipeline and the Río Indio water project as priorities. The Río Indio initiative is regarded as crucial to the basin’s operational sustainability and water supply.

Former President Martín Torrijos stressed the importance of technical training in managing the canal during a complex period. He also linked the future use of the public company’s profits to national water and development needs, noting that more than $30 billion has been transferred to the state since the canal was returned to Panama.
