Ex-Colombian President Samper Warns of 'True Invasion' of Latin America

Former Colombian President Ernesto Samper has declared that Latin America is facing a "true invasion" of its countries by forces seeking to "fascistize" regional relations with the United States. Samper voiced these concerns during the opening of the Pan American Congress in Montevideo.

He directly linked this trend to what he described as the "hegemonic policy" of Donald Trump, asserting that Trump has aggressively expanded influence.

Samper pointed to specific actions such as increased tariffs, the persecution of migrants, and the suspension of USAID programs as evidence of this aggressive stance. He further warned of emerging territorial claims, suggesting the situation has escalated beyond initial concerns. "This was just the beginning, but now we already have territorial claims," he added.

To counter these perceived threats, Samper urged progressive forces across the region to unite. He argued that the "unilateralism" of U.S. foreign policy, combined with similar efforts from Europe, is undermining the potential for multilateral globalization. The Pan American Congress, attended by over one hundred legislators and political leaders from the region, aims to establish a better balance between North and South America and develop coordinated proposals on peace, security, multilateralism, sustainable development, and digital sovereignty.
