Ex-convict targeted in assassination attempt in Paraguay

Delcio Rojas Cáceres, a 27-year-old man with a criminal record, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Friday afternoon in San Pedro del Paraná, Itapúa department. Rojas Cáceres had previously been prosecuted for murder in Yuty.

The victim sustained a grazing wound to his forehead. He took his bullet-riddled vehicle to a relative's house before being assisted by other family members to the District Hospital. Rojas Cáceres had recently been released from the Cambyretá prison, where he had been held since his arrest on August 24 of the previous year in San Pedro del Paraná. He had been indicted for the murder of veterinarian Bartolomé Vega Caballero, 35, who was killed on August 1 of the previous year in Yuty. Security cameras had recorded the incident, showing a man who entered Vega's clinic as a customer and then fatally shot him from behind. Although police and prosecutors initially believed Rojas Cáceres was the killer, this theory apparently could not be sustained, leading to his release. Now, the same man, previously suspected of being a hitman, has become the target of an assassination attempt.
