Ex-Gov Goje denies defection to PDP, but remains exploring future path

Former Gombe State governor and senator Muhammad Goje has publicly denied reports of his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking to supporters at his residence in Gombe, Goje clarified his political standing amidst growing speculation about his future.

Goje affirmed his continued membership in the APC, stating, "I am still consulting on what to do next." This clarification comes after speculation intensified following his failure to secure the APC's ticket for re-election, with Mohammed Ahmadu emerging as the party's candidate. Further fueling the rumors was a social media video showing Goje with prominent PDP figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Gombe governor Ibrahim Dankwambo.

Over seven years ago, three months after the present administration came into office in Gombe, I told you at Pantami Stadium that I would not contest any political position again.

Despite the speculation, Goje emphasized that no decision has been made regarding his departure from the APC. He reminded his supporters of his past intention to withdraw from elective politics, an intention they persuaded him to reconsider, leading to his Senate re-election. He expressed deep gratitude for their unwavering loyalty and support, recalling how they secured his victory even without his active campaigning.

We won even when I did not come out to campaign during the electioneering period. I remain grateful to you for your loyalty and for believing in me.

As a gesture of appreciation, Goje announced the distribution of ₦45 million among his supporters. Reflecting on his extensive political career, which spans over 45 years and includes eight contested and won elections, he acknowledged the numerous positions he has held. He urged his supporters to maintain their loyalty to the movement's leadership while he completes his consultations on his next political move.
