Ex-Mexican internationals back Rangel over Ochoa for World Cup starting spot

As Mexico prepares for its World Cup debut on June 11 against South Africa, former national team players are weighing in on the starting goalkeeper position. Francisco Javier ‘Maza’ Rodríguez and Óscar ‘Conejo’ Pérez, both seasoned World Cup veterans, have expressed their confidence in Raúl Rangel to start over the more experienced Guillermo Ochoa.

Rodríguez, who participated in three World Cups, noted the intense competition for the goalkeeper spot but leaned towards Rangel. "I see a very solid defensive line and a very intense battle in goal; I think Rangel should be the one to start, although we can expect some surprise. Javier has that extra something, sometimes he trains with some and on game day he puts others in," Rodríguez stated. He specifically favored the Guadalajara goalkeeper despite Ochoa receiving his sixth World Cup call-up.

Óscar Pérez, who also played in three World Cups, echoed Rodríguez's sentiment. "There has been a lot of talk about the goalkeepers. Whoever starts in goal will be secure, although I think Rangel has done very well, Javier backs him up, so I think he can start. Javier is a very precise guy in the details," Pérez commented. He clarified that his preference is not based on a lack of quality in Ochoa or Carlos Acevedo, but rather on Rangel's consistent form with his club.

Beyond the goalkeeping debate, Rodríguez also commented on the team's defense, singling out Johan Vásquez of Italian club Genoa. "I really like the center-backs. I highlight what Johan has shown, who is doing very well in Italian football, hopefully his performances will be enough for him to move to a bigger team; I think he can be the benchmark for Mexican football," Rodríguez said. Both former players expressed excitement for Mexico's opening match at the Estadio Azteca, hoping the current squad can achieve what they couldn't in their careers.
