Thomas, who represented clubs such as Shaw Lane, Stafford Rangers, Frickley Athletic, and Brighouse Town, played in England, Belgium, Canada, and the United States. While acknowledging that financial opportunities sometimes influenced his moves, he stresses the significant benefits of international exposure. His career nearly ended in 2013 due to a severe groin injury, leading him to consider joining the army while working in a call center. However, an opportunity to revive his playing career with Thunder Bay Chill in Ontario, Canada, emerged. Earlier in his career, Thomas played against Jamie Vardy when Vardy was with Halifax Town, before Vardy's rise to Premier League and international fame.
