Ex-Polish PM Morawiecki forms new parliamentary faction

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the formation of a new parliamentary faction on Wednesday, signaling a significant split within the dominant Law and Justice (PiS) party. Morawiecki stated that the decision was made to avoid "unnecessary internal party games" and to concentrate on key issues.

The new faction's stated goals include focusing on economic prosperity, strengthening the military, and preserving Polish cultural identity. This move comes after internal discord within the PiS party, reportedly stemming from disagreements between the 77-year-old party founder Jarosław Kaczyński and the 58-year-old Morawiecki.

Sources indicate that Morawiecki and other moderate members of the party formed an association called "Development Plus" due to dissatisfaction with Kaczyński's increasingly right-wing direction. Kaczyński had reportedly demanded the dissolution of this group and a loyalty pledge from its members, demands that Morawiecki refused to meet.

Until this split, the PiS party held a majority in the Sejm with 181 representatives and 33 in the Senate. The formation of Morawiecki's new faction marks a significant shift in the Polish political landscape, potentially impacting the balance of power within the parliament.
