Exercise Bougainville 2026 to Drive Improvements in Fiji's Disaster Policy and Preparedness

Fiji is set to conduct "Exercise Bougainville 2026," a critical initiative designed to bolster the nation's disaster preparedness systems and refine policies governing emergency response. The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development views this exercise as a vital opportunity to strengthen Fiji's resilience against natural hazards.

Mitieli Cama, Acting Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development, stated that the exercise's primary goal is to rigorously test existing capabilities. Crucially, it will also pinpoint specific areas where current policies and operational procedures can be enhanced. Cama emphasized that any recommendations emerging from the exercise will be carefully considered to ensure Fiji's disaster response mechanisms remain robust and adaptable to future challenges.

"If there is a need to change the policy, not only to change but to improve the existing policy, that is exactly the purpose of the exercise," Cama explained. He highlighted that continuous improvement is paramount for government agencies to maintain readiness when disasters strike, especially given Fiji's vulnerability to natural calamities.

The exercise will serve as a platform to assess current systems, improve coordination among key stakeholders, and build resilience against potential disaster scenarios.
