As the Finnish rock band Eppu Normaali approaches its farewell tour after 50 years, experts are delving into what makes the Ylöjärvi-originating group so unique. Musician Iiro Rantala, who has been part of Eppu Normaali's live lineup for a decade and is participating in their final concerts, points to brotherhood as the core of their enduring appeal.

Rantala highlights the crucial contributions of the Syrjä brothers, Martti and Mikko "Pantse" Syrjä, particularly after Mikko Saarela departed in 1979. He describes their songwriting process, where Pantse would compose a melody and Martti would write lyrics, followed by collaborative refinement. Beyond the familial bond, Rantala identifies the band's humor, self-irony, wordplay, and diverse song subjects as key differentiators. He acknowledges the difficulty of incorporating humor into rock music, a genre often associated with coolness, but praises Eppu Normaali for mastering it. "If you want to use humor, you have to do it exceptionally well. The risks are high. Eppu Normaali has succeeded brilliantly," he stated.

Furthermore, Rantala contrasts Eppu Normaali's career trajectory with that of many other Finnish male artists, who often face struggles with alcohol, burnout, melancholy, and health issues, leading to career declines. He lists numerous artists like Olavi Virta, Juice Leskinen, and Kari Tapio as examples. "I can't think of anyone else who gets to end their career like this – at the top. And still healthy," Rantala remarked, calling it "rare and spectacular."
