Exploration Fields Overlap With Vital Water and Nature Protection Areas, Serbian Group Warns

A citizens' group is raising alarms over geological exploration plans that encroach upon ecologically sensitive areas in Bobija, Jablanik, and Medvednik. The initiative "Ne damo Bobiju, Medvednik i Jablanik" (We Don't Give Bobija, Medvednik, and Jablanik) highlights that the designated exploration fields overlap with crucial zones for water protection and nature conservation.

On the space that these areas cover, 333 protected species have been recorded, of which 88 are on the Bern Convention list. We believe that this data must be one of the key elements in considering all activities that can affect this space.

Their analysis reveals that the exploration boundaries coincide with the Stubo-Rovni water accumulation's watershed and protection zones, as well as the Povlen area and the Sušica canyon. These regions are home to 333 protected species, with 88 listed under the Bern Convention, a fact the group insists must be a primary consideration for any activity impacting the area.

While Jablanik and Medvednik were previously identified in spatial plans for protection, formal protection procedures have not yet begun. Simultaneously, permits for geological exploration of mineral resources have been granted for the same territory. The group is pressing authorities for answers regarding the thoroughness of environmental impact assessments, consideration of protected species, and the measures in place to prevent exploration from jeopardizing water protection regimes and natural values.

They argue that the Stubo-Rovni area is vital for water resources, while Povlen and Gradac boast exceptional natural values, underscoring the urgency of complete protection before activities irreversibly alter the landscape.

Therefore, we believe it is necessary to open the issue of comprehensive protection of this area before activities that can permanently change its natural characteristics become more intense.
