Explosive drone found in Germany signals 'new level of threat' from Russia, experts say

German authorities have launched a counter-terrorism investigation after an explosive-laden drone was discovered near a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Tuesday evening. The incident has raised serious security concerns, with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt describing it as a "hybrid attack" that represents a "new level of threat."

Ukraine's ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Makeiev, pointed fingers at Moscow, suggesting Russian involvement in the incident. Experts analyzing the situation believe this discovery signifies a dangerous escalation in Russia's hybrid warfare campaign against NATO. Dr. Aleksander Olech, head of international cooperation at Defence24, noted that previous drone intrusions near civilian airports and military bases were likely reconnaissance missions.

According to reports, the unexploded device may have contained Semtex and was equipped with a detonation mechanism. It was found near a Ukrainian An-124 "Ruslan" transport aircraft. Olech warned that similar actions could occur in Poland, urging the nation to prepare for such scenarios. He highlighted that Poland is currently the most frequently targeted country in Europe by Russian operations below the threshold of war, serving as a primary logistical center for aid to Ukraine.
