Explosive Drone Near Ukrainian Planes at Leipzig Airport Fuels Sabotage Fears

German authorities are investigating a potential link between two incidents at Leipzig Airport after a drone carrying explosives was discovered near Ukrainian transport aircraft. The discovery has fueled fears of Russian sabotage operations targeting Ukraine's logistical support.

The drone, identified as a quadrocopter fitted with a bomb and detonator, was found on the airport's south runway late Tuesday night following a general drone alarm. Its location near four Ukrainian Antonov transport planes, which were moved to Germany for safety before Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, has raised significant concerns.

The Antonov planes themselves bear slogans such as "Be brave like Kherson" and "Be brave like Bucha," referencing Ukrainian cities affected by the conflict. The presence of the explosive-laden drone so close to these aircraft, which are used for transporting aid, has prompted a thorough investigation.

Authorities are examining whether this incident is connected to a separate collision that also occurred at the airport. Leipzig is considered a key logistics hub for supplies destined for Ukraine, making the airport a potentially sensitive target. The investigation aims to determine the origin and intent behind the drone's placement and assess any broader security implications.
