Explosive-laden drone defused at Leipzig Airport

Specialists from the Federal Police successfully defused a drone equipped with an explosive device found on the runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The State Criminal Police Office (LKA) confirmed that the fuse of the unknown explosive mechanism was removed.

Federal and state security authorities are jointly investigating the incident, with the General Prosecutor's Office in Dresden and the Police Counter-Terrorism and Extremism Center (PTAZ) leading the probe. They have not ruled out political motivation, emphasizing the airport's status as critical infrastructure.

During the night, a second, unidentified flying object reportedly collided with a cargo plane that had to perform a go-around due to the runway closure. The aircraft sustained minor damage upon landing in Hanover. Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster described the event as a "very serious security incident."

While flight operations were initially halted, the "North runway" was reopened after a thorough security check. The "South runway," where the drone was found, was not scheduled for use due to maintenance. Authorities assured that there was no danger to passengers or airport personnel, and passenger flights remained unaffected.
