Explosives-laden bus intercepted in Colombia, potential target was presidential inauguration

Colombian authorities have intercepted a bus laden with 420 kilograms of explosives in Cauca, a significant development amid heightened security for President Abelardo De La Espriella's upcoming inauguration in Cali. The vehicle, found on the Panamericana highway in Santander de Quilichao, was neutralized by the National Police as part of "Operation Prometeo."

Preliminary information suggests the bus was prepared by the 'Jaime Martínez' front, a dissident faction of the FARC, known for its explosive attacks in the region. Experts safely detonated the 420 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, which was contained in seven cylinders with launch ramps.

Authorities are investigating two main hypotheses: whether the bus was intended to disrupt De La Espriella's inauguration, scheduled for August 7, or if it was meant to attack security forces. This attack could have aimed to ease pressure on drug trafficking routes used by the dissidents.

The discovery aligns with President Gustavo Petro's prior warnings about "tons of explosives in Cali." Defense Minister General (r) Pedro Sánchez expressed confidence in the security measures for the event, stating that all risks are being mitigated. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation in reporting threats, noting that over 11,000 security personnel are deployed in Cali and Valle del Cauca.
