Extreme Heat and Severe Storms Forecast for Romania, Temperatures to Reach 39°C

Romania is facing a severe weather alert, with the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issuing yellow and orange codes for extreme heat and atmospheric instability from August 7th to 8th. The country will experience a new wave of heat, with temperatures potentially reaching 39 degrees Celsius, alongside episodes of instability that could bring violent storms.

A yellow code for heat is in effect for Dobrogea, most of Muntenia and Moldova, southern and western Oltenia, southwestern and northwestern Transylvania, and central and northern Crișana. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 31 and 37 degrees Celsius, leading to high thermal discomfort. The "temperature-humidity index" (ITU) is predicted to exceed 80 units. Nighttime temperatures will remain high, between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius, contributing to tropical nights, particularly along the coast.

In Arad and Timiș counties, an orange code for heat is active during the same period. Here, maximum temperatures could climb to 35–39 degrees Celsius, intensifying thermal discomfort. The ITU will surpass critical thresholds, and minimum nighttime temperatures will hover between 20 and 22 degrees, maintaining the tropical night conditions.

Alongside the heat, a yellow code for atmospheric instability is active on August 7th for Banat, Crișana, Transylvania, most of Moldova and Muntenia, and northern Oltenia. This alert warns of wind gusts reaching 50–70 km/h, potentially exceeding 80 km/h in some areas. Torrential downpours, electrical discharges, and isolated small hail are expected. Rainfall could accumulate between 15–20 liters per square meter in short periods, with mountainous areas potentially seeing over 30–50 liters per square meter.

Furthermore, a significant portion of the mountainous region, Maramureș, and northern and northwestern Moldova are under an orange code for severe atmospheric instability on August 7th. This warning highlights the risk of powerful windstorms with gusts of 70–90 km/h, substantial torrential downpours, frequent electrical discharges, and hail ranging from medium to possibly large sizes (2–4 centimeters in diameter). Rainfall accumulation could reach 25–40 liters per square meter in one to three hours, potentially exceeding 50 liters in isolated spots.
