Extreme Heat Strains Uzbekistan's Power Grids, Threatening Blackouts

Uzbekistan's energy infrastructure is under strain from an intense heatwave, prompting warnings of possible temporary power outages in various regions. The Ministry of Energy has alerted the public that electricity grids and equipment are operating under significant stress during periods of peak demand.

Energy companies have transitioned to an enhanced operational mode, with emergency crews working around the clock to address any emerging malfunctions. The ministry is urging citizens to use electricity sparingly, particularly during the hottest parts of the day, to alleviate the burden on the system.

The surge in electricity usage is primarily attributed to the widespread use of air conditioning and other cooling appliances. This comes as Uzbekistan braces for another wave of extreme heat, with temperatures expected to reach +43–+45 degrees Celsius across most of the country from July 18 to 20, and potentially soaring to +46–+48 degrees in southern and desert areas.

While reports of planned two-hour blackouts nationwide remain unconfirmed by primary sources, the Ministry of Energy acknowledges the likelihood of temporary disruptions in specific areas due to technical issues. The focus remains on managing the current load and preparing for the anticipated temperature increase.
