Extreme heat warning expands to Gyeongbuk, Jeonnam; Yangsan endures fourth day above 40C

South Korea is experiencing a severe heatwave, with the "major heatwave warning" now extended to include regions in Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam, previously limited to parts of Gyeongnam. Yangsan, in particular, has endured temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius for four consecutive days, setting a new record for the city. On August 1, by 11 a.m., areas such as Gyeongju, Yeosu, and Boseong in Jeonnam, and Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, and Pohang in Gyeongbuk, were placed under the highest level of heat advisory. By 1 p.m. that day, Yangsan registered a scorching 40.9 degrees Celsius, with Ulsan at 39.8, Gimhae at 39.7, and Busan at 39.4 degrees. Gyeongju reached 39.2 degrees, and Gwangyang hit 38 degrees. The relentless heat in Yangsan, surpassing 40 degrees for four days straight, marks the first time the city has experienced such prolonged extreme temperatures. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that most regions across the country will continue to experience peak "feels like" temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius. They strongly advise citizens to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, emphasizing the high risk of heatstroke and urging anyone experiencing symptoms like vomiting or high fever to call 119 immediately.
