Extreme Heat Grips South Korea, Temperatures to Exceed 39 Degrees Celsius

South Korea is grappling with an intense heatwave, as most regions remain under heatwave advisories with expected temperatures reaching around 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit). The situation is particularly critical in the Gyeongnam region, where the apparent temperature could soar above 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit), posing a life-threatening risk. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that the oppressive heat and tropical nights, characterized by nighttime temperatures remaining above 25 degrees Celsius, will persist nationwide. Daily high temperatures are expected to significantly exceed the seasonal average, with cities like Seoul reaching 34C, Busan 39C, and Gwangju 38C. While central regions may experience scattered clouds, southern areas and Jeju Island are predicted to be mostly clear. However, dense fog reducing visibility to less than 200 meters is anticipated in parts of Jeonbuk and Jeonnam. Strong winds are also expected along the eastern coast of Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, prompting warnings for facility management and safety. Air quality is generally forecast to be good to normal, though some residual fine dust in central and southern areas might temporarily increase concentrations before dissipating. Authorities have issued strong recommendations for areas under the highest heatwave alert, urging the immediate suspension or postponement of all non-essential outdoor activities and work, advising people to move to cool indoor locations.
