Extreme Weather: Patagonia Province Extends Winter Holidays by Three Days

Winter holidays in Argentina's Santa Cruz province have been extended by three days due to extreme weather. The Provincial Education Council announced the recess would continue until Thursday, July 30, citing a report from the Undersecretariat of Civil Protection. This measure aims to protect students, teachers, and families from the harsh climate.

The decision was adopted based on the report prepared by the Undersecretariat of Civil Protection and Comprehensive Approach to Emergencies and Catastrophes, with the objective of safeguarding the safety of students, teachers, auxiliary staff, and families.

Classes for students are suspended for the initial three days of the extended break. However, teachers will engage in virtual work to ensure educational continuity across all levels and modalities. The Provincial Education Council stated this virtual period will also be used to strengthen institutional pedagogical proposals and align with public policies aimed at enhancing educational quality in Santa Cruz.

The region is experiencing temperatures colder than Antarctica. The National Meteorological Service issued a orange alert for the Comandante Luis Piedra Buena region, forecasting persistent snowfall of 20 to 40 centimeters in mountainous areas and 10 to 30 centimeters in low-lying areas. Similar alerts were issued for parts of Tierra del Fuego and Neuquén.

While classes for students will remain suspended during the first three days of next week, teacher work will be carried out virtually, guaranteeing institutional pedagogical work at all levels and modalities of the provincial educational system.

The provincial government justified the decision as a measure to "preserve the integrity of the entire educational community" and ensure the "strengthening of institutional educational proposals." While the official winter break was scheduled from July 13 to July 24, Santa Cruz is the only province to extend it due to weather concerns.
