Extremists Fostered Fear Through Mob Culture Post-Uprising, Says Dr. Kamal Hossain

Gono Forum founder and emeritus president Dr. Kamal Hossain asserted that "evil forces" and extremists have cultivated a pervasive climate of fear through violence and mob culture since the July 2024 uprising. He stated that these elements, mirroring tactics of previous regimes, are actively engaged in terrorism, clashes, killings, and establishing dominance through extortion and land grabbing.

Dr. Hossain issued a stark warning, suggesting that Bangladesh could face a severe crisis if the government does not effectively curb these "evil forces." He contends that these groups are actively undermining Bengali culture and the foundational principles established during the Liberation War, even questioning settled historical issues. Speaking at an event marking Gono Forum's 33rd founding anniversary, his remarks were delivered via a written statement read by General Secretary Md Mizanur Rahman.

He appealed for solidarity among all organizations that cherish the spirit of the Liberation War, urging them to unite and speak out against these detrimental forces. Dr. Hossain reflected that while the 2024 mass uprising successfully ended authoritarian rule, the failure to capitalize on this opportunity to build a democratic, humane, and equitable welfare state could unfortunately lead to anarchy.

Economist Prof. Rehman Sobhan, speaking at the event, lauded Dr. Hossain's principled and idealistic political career, highlighting his commitment to democratic governance and social justice. LGRD Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan noted that Gono Forum's establishment stemmed from Dr. Hossain's deep belief in democracy and a just society. Economist Debapriya Bhattacharya further recognized Dr. Hossain's significant contributions beyond constitution-making, emphasizing his role in advocating for human rights, the rule of law, and citizens' rights, as well as his crucial legal work in protecting national resources.
