F-16s intercept multiple planes in restricted airspace over New Jersey

U.S. F-16 fighter jets intercepted several general aviation aircraft on Sunday for violating temporary flight restrictions over parts of New Jersey. The airspace violations occurred near Bedminster and East Rutherford, locations significant due to the recent 2026 World Cup final match held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed that flares were deployed in two of the three encounters to gain the attention of the pilots. These flares may have been visible to individuals on the ground. NORAD stated that flares are used with safety as the highest priority, burn out quickly, and pose no danger to people below.

Temporary flight restrictions are commonly implemented around major events, such as sporting competitions like the World Cup, which often attract large crowds and high-profile attendees.
