Fact Check: Bank Indonesia Governor Did Not Assault TV Presenter

A series of fabricated images depicting Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo assaulting TV presenter Najwa Shihab have spread across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok between April and July 2026. These posts, often featuring the Kompas.tv logo, falsely claim the incident occurred after Shihab questioned Warjiyo about a scandal related to his position.

Tempo.co conducted a fact-check using direct observation, AI detection software, and cross-referencing with credible sources. The investigation revealed that all the circulating content was fake. AI detection models, including Google's Gemini and the Hive Moderation tool, flagged the images with high probabilities of being artificially generated, some exceeding 98%. Specific anomalies were noted, such as a missing fingertip on Shihab in one image and unnatural lines between Warjiyo's fingers in another.

Further analysis using tools like Gemini, Was It AI, AI or NOT, and Truth Scan confirmed the artificial nature of the images. Probabilities of AI generation ranged from 45% to 99.8%, with specific models like Gemini, Seedance, GPT-40, and Stable Diffusion identified as likely tools used in their creation.

Tempo traced the origin of the false narrative to the website Minakonews, which published the claims on April 17, 2026. The website alleged the images were captured from a live broadcast of the "Rosi" show on Kompas TV the previous day. However, verification of the "Rosi" program's past episodes revealed that the guest on May 17, 2017, was National Police Chief Tito Karnavian, not Governor Perry Warjiyo and Najwa Shihab.
