Fake license plates from Russia were sold in Almaty - suspect detained

Kazakh authorities have detained a suspect in Almaty accused of selling counterfeit license plates that were allegedly shipped from Russia via express delivery. Investigators stated that these fake registration plates were then distributed to customers across various regions of Kazakhstan.

During the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated a quantity of fake license plates and other physical evidence. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to identify all individuals who may have participated in this illicit scheme. The Chief Transport Prosecutor’s Office has reminded the public that the use of counterfeit state registration plates is a criminal offense and can pose a significant threat to road safety.

Mazhilis deputy Bakytzhan Bazarbek has proposed introducing criminal liability for the use of counterfeit vehicle license plates in Kazakhstan, citing the widespread nature of the problem and its serious consequences. "A great many people suffer because of this, and there are many accidents in which investigators later establish that the person responsible for the crash was using fake state registration plates," Bazarbek said during a Mazhilis session, noting that such incidents occur nationwide.

KazAvtoZhol reported that since the beginning of the year, 1,942 cases involving counterfeit, concealed, altered, or unreadable state registration plates have been recorded on the country's toll roads. Specialists confirm that information about such vehicles is promptly forwarded to the police for further action.
